Grayson Highlands, VA: Fall, 2007 (yes, that is a dog with a lampshade, poor guy)

Hello world, my name is Kevin Webster. On January 6th, 1987, my very sweet mother, Kathy, gave birth to me in the now dwindling city of High Point, North Carolina. After living there for about three years, our house, consisting of myself, my mother, my father, and my older sister, was broken into prompting us to move to a nearby growing town of Trinity, North Carolina, where I lived for 17 years before moving to Boone, North Carolina to attend Appalachian State University.

During my years as a child, I loved to play sports, ride bicycles, be outside (hiking, running, etc), and play music (I have been playing guitar since I was in fifth grade). These interests primarily led me to become a student at ASU, already having known and experienced many places throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just recently I have taken a liking to photography after receiving my first camera just over a year ago. Ever since, I have been documenting my life and my family’s life through the photographs of my travels throughout the United States. Just recently I visited the Grand Canyon, and even more recently I finally got to see my nation’s capital, Washington D.C.

When I was a Senior in high school, I figured out that I liked to read. Imagine that! So, when I enrolled at ASU, I figured heck! I’ll keep reading. I liked reading so much that I decided to become an English major. And after reading so much, I found out that I also like to write. Some thought that I wrote quite nicely and were kind enough to publish one of my poem’s in the first edition of The Peel, Appalachian State’s revived literary art magazine. If you find it, you might have a hard time finding my name because I used a pen name to publish it.

After pondering on why it took me so long to get interested in books and novels, I figured heck! I’ll become a teacher. But, more seriously, I felt a strong calling to be apart of my community, to be a catalyst for future generations, and I wanted to be in a position where I could make significant impacts on others’ lives and vice versa.

My favorite authors are Paul Beatty, Mark Twain, and Haruki Murakami. I liked to read other people’s personal poetry but I don’t like to let people read mine, not really fair is it? Those people are my favorite poets.

In the Fall of 2009, I will begin my student teaching, who knows where, and I look forward to it a lot. In the future, I would like to do other things than teach like: work on a farm, be a cowboy, be a writer, or work for a nonprofit organization.

This is my favorite photograph that I have ever taken (it was a lot of peoples’ Christmas present this past year):

Thanks for the detail about your life, travels, and aspirations. I have not heard of Trinity, North Carolina, so I looked it up on Google Earth. Now I know it is between Archdale and Thomasville. What highway runs through Trinity?

Do you photograph digitally or 35mm or both? I dabble in photography too—wish I had more time to devote to it. Grand Canyon is breathtaking, and so is the entire Colorado Plateau. If you get the chance, take a trip to Moab, Utah. There is so much to see from there, not to mention Moab is a cool place itself. I hope you post more photos to your blog.

Your passion for reading and writing will carry over to your students: keep writing. Come on, post your poem on your blog. You’re published! Share it with us.

Interstate-85 runs through Trinity, Archdale, and Thomasville, and then eventually hits Greensboro further north. Maybe I’ll put up a poem if I’m feeling confident.

    Hey Kevin!
I love your blog. I didn’t know what a talented young man you were when we were slicing meat in the Deli!
Your writing is very personable and interesting and your photography is pretty amazing. I’m excited for you in your future and all that you are going to do with your life.
And I agree with Dr. Trathen, give up a poem for us.
Also your Grand Canyon pic gives me a new perspective on what I thought was just a big crack in the ground ( I had visited a few times growing up).
Take Care and see you in class,

    Kevin,

I really enjoyed reading your autobiography. You are a very interesting guy. I think that you are a very thoughtful person, and for that you will make a great teacher.

Your photography is beautiful. I am very envious of that kind of skill…the only thing I am good at taking pictures of is my finger over the lense.

Hey, I think we’re both going to Ashe High School for our internships. Good luck on the photography, keep trying. I just get lucky.

I have no clue where you can get the first edition. I don’t think the library even has it. There is a second edition coming out, but I don’t think I’ll get what I submitted published. Bummer.

    Dear Kevin,
I think that the best poetry is the kind that it shared.

    Kevin,
Your life sounds pretty interesting, I love taking pictures too, but I think I need to go a few more places to get one as good as yours! And I think you should definitely be a cowboy, I come from the country and live on a farm, and trust me, it’s great.
    Good luck with everything.

    Kevin,

I dig the autobiography. It took me quite a long while to enjoy reading and writing but not it is my one true passion as well. The pictures are great and i always took you for a cyclist. Do you ride around here at all? I just started to enjoy two wheels recently but I’m always looking for a good ride, so if you are up for it…

    Kevin,
As we previously discussed I think that the Arthur Morgan School would be a great match for you. I have really enjoyed getting to know more about you by reading this autobiography. I too love to read poetry but will never let anyone read what I write on my own. Continue taking pictures you have a natural talent for it. Good luck in life.
